Opened in 2006 in a late-19C primary school, the Kyoto International Manga Museum, as irreverent as its subject, will bring a smile of surprise to your lips. The word manga was invented by master engraver Hokusai (1760-1849). Home to 50 000 mangas, the museum offers plenty of choice, so take time to explore the huge archives and discover more about the history of the manga. Temporary exhibitions, meetings, lectures and conferences complete the picture.
