Walter Scott, in his novel St Ronan's Well, popularised the therapeutic benefits of this already renowned mineral spring. The well's heyday has passed but the little building overlooking the town has been restored and contains a museum devoted to the thermal springs and their connection to the writers Hogg and Scott.
