Begun in 1976, the Oosterschelde dam was inaugurated 10 years later. The road passing over the dam opened in 1987. This 3km-long hydraulic masterpiece is unique in the world. The initial dam project, which involved the complete enclosure of the Oosterschelde estuary, was modified to retain a link between the estuary and the sea. To learn more, visit the Delta-Expo, an exhibition on the history of hydraulic projects in the Netherlands, and take a tour of one of the dam's pillars.
