Copper Mine

 Michelin Guide
 Well worth the diversions
Industrial site
  The Michelin Guide's review
Closed in 1992, Falun's open-cast copper mine, a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, came about as a result of major subsidence in 1687. Since that time, the "great shaft" (100m deep and 400m wide) has become a major tourist attraction. A staircase goes down to a depth of 55m, where the circuit (approximately 600m) takes in some of the oldest chambers and galleries, as well as the shaft where mining began in 1662. A lift brings visitors back up to the surface.
