The Michelin Guide's review
The Convent of Santiago Apóstol stands on a vast lawn, shrouded in an indescribable melancholy. Begun in the mid-16C, the construction of this imposing Dominican monastery was halted by order of Martín Cortés, Marquis del Valle de Oaxaca, who was no longer willing to supply the labour. Although unfinished and without a roof, the Renaissance-inspired chapel is absolutely majestic. The church, perpendicular to the chapel, wasn't completed either. The cloister with two galleries boasts superb remains of grisaille and polychrome murals.
