Fort district, the capital's historic heart, is the site of handsome Victorian buildings which date from the colonial era and are still occupied by the headquarters of many Sri Lankan businesses. Take the lift to the top floor of the Grand Oriental hotel and contemplate the port, fortified by the Portuguese in the 16C, because the latter is closed to the public during a massive renovation project until the end of the 2020s.
