Augusta Raurica - Roman ruins at Augst

 Michelin Guide
 Well worth the diversions
Historical and archaeological site
  The Michelin Guide's review
It is due to a friend of Julius Caesar, Roman general Munatius Plancus, that Switzerland can claim the vestiges of the Rhine's oldest Roman settlement, Colonia Raurica, founded in 44-43 BCE. Augst itself was destroyed by Alemanni tribes around 260. The fascinating site, which impresses by its size, showcases the innumerable objects unearthed during digs in the ancient city (over one and a half million!), including a staggering collection of silver kept in the museum.
