Anyer, a major port during colonial times, has not forgotten the lethal ground swell that followed the eruption of Krakatau. Two years after the catastrophe, Queen Wilhelmina of Holland gave the village the lighthouse visible among the coconut trees, near the beach. Anyer is now a chic destination for Jarkartans. Its white sand beaches lying in the shade of coconut trees are overrun at weekends but almost deserted during the week. There are fabulous coral reefs off the Sangiang Island.
