  The Michelin Guide's review
Like many of the forts built during the Mughal period, Agra Fort, surrounded by double walls, housed a mix of private dwellings and religious buildings. Built in 1565 by Akbar, the fort was extended and embellished in 1571 by Shah Jahan, the smitten sultan of the Taj Mahal. Throughout the courtyards and gardens, the various palaces (Jahangir Palace, Khas Mahal Palaces) and halls of audience (Diwan-i Am, Diwan-i Khas) are typical of the Mughal architectural style, built in red sandstone and white marble. The romantic Taj Mahal can be seen in the background.
