The Michelin Guide's review
At km 12, the Samaria Gorge becomes narrower. The path follows the riverbed, entirely surrounded by high rock faces: you pass between the Iron Gates, 300 m-high cliffs on which the undulations of the geological layers can be seen. At the narrowest point, the gorges are no more than 2.5 to 3 m wide. Further downstream, the valley widens considerably and the river disperses into different channels. Oleanders flourish between the waters. Kilometre 13 marks the end of the gorge.
