The Michelin Guide's review
This forest is part of the virgin subtropical broadleaf forest that covers 83% of the surface of Amami-Ōshima island. A 2km hiking circuit has been laid out with panels providing information on the endemic plant and animal species. The foliage and flowers are often situated very high up in the trees, seeking the light. The giant ferns are home to Ryukyu robin, green woodpecker, Lidth's jay, while on the ground Amami rabbits live alongside geckos and green and black frogs.
