Famous museums, neighbourhoods that dance until late, sun-drenched terraces, the scent of bitter oranges or freshly-baked tortillas... Madrid can be experienced at your own pace, for a weekend without detours.
Day 1: Dive into old Madrid
- Morning
Start your day at the Plaza Mayor, a large arcade-lined rectangular square, before heading to the bustling Puerta del Sol. Stroll through these narrow streets that are the beating heart of old Madrid, home to small shops, baroque statues, and lively street cafes. Depending on your mood, you can visit the Thyssen-Bornemisza museum or the Prado museum two cultural gems housing masterpieces of European art. The former offers a rich overview of the history of painting, while the latter is home to Velázquez, Goya and Rubens. - Lunchtime & Afternoon
Go to the Retiro Park for lunch before enjoying an afternoon amid the greenery. In this vast green setting where Madrileños love to meet up to read, walk or chat, hire a boat, explore the Crystal Palace or have a picnic under the trees. A welcome haven of coolness in summer, where the song of the parakeets adds an exotic note to the peaceful atmosphere. - Evening
Return to the historic centre or the museum district for your evening. Treat yourself to a flamenco show in an intimate tablao, then dine on the terrace with some classic tapas. Special mention goes to Cava Baja, where historic establishments rub shoulders with the landmarks of new Spanish cuisine.

Day 2: Madrid nowadays, between contemporary culture and local traditions
- Morning
Start your day at Atocha Station, whose glass roof shelters a lush tropical garden: an unusual place to take a break, where turtles live alongside exotic plants. Continue on foot to the Reina Sofía Museum, where Picasso’s famous Guernica awaits you. You’ll also find works by Dalí and Miró in a modern, airy building.
Before lunch, visit the Lavapiés district, one of the most cosmopolitan in the city. Andalusian cafés, African bookshops, colourful street art… the atmosphere is warm, lively, and welcoming. Every alleyway seems to tell a story from elsewhere, between cultural diversity and urban creativity. - Lunchtime
The La Latina district welcomes you with its cobbled streets, flower-filled balconies, and village atmosphere right in the city centre. Sit down for lunch at the Plaza de la Paja where the trees protect you from the heat. On Sundays, the famous El Rastro market brings the area to life. Stop off at the San Miguel market, perfect for a quick bite to eat with Iberian ham, olives and a glass of local white wine. Children will love the churros or a fresh fruit juice. - Afternoon
Then set off on foot to explore the gems of the historic center. Start at the Opera House, then wander through the hidden squares that lead to the Royal Palace, whose surroundings are freely accessible and often enlivened by musicians or street performers. Continue on to the remains of the Muslim wall, a discreet but striking testament to Madrid’s medieval history. A few more steps and you’ll reach the majestic Basilica of San Francisco el Grande with its impressive dome and luminous frescoes. - Evening
Climb up to the Sabatini gardens to watch the sun set over the city rooftops. Or opt for a quiet rooftop bar around Calle Mayor. Here, royal heritage meets urban modernity, all bathed in the golden light of the evening.

Day 3: Madrid lifestyle
- Morning
From Calle Preciados, head to Gran Vía with its magnificent façades and historic shops. Visit the Círculo de Bellas Artes for a coffee with a view. Along the way, take in the architectural details of the Art Deco buildings and don’t hesitate to stop off for a spot of shopping. - Lunchtime
Stroll through Malasaña, among vintage stores, galleries and coffee shops, then cross over to Chueca, a lively and inclusive neighbourhood where you can have lunch in cheerful and colourful cafés. Try a new take on Mediterranean cuisine or a vegetarian paella. - Afternoon
Climb up to the Temple of Debod, an Egyptian monument overlooking Madrid. One of the most peaceful spots in which to rest, observe and relax. Bring a book, take a photo, or simply let yourself be lulled by the calm of the place.
