How far can you drive on reserve ?
The expression “driving on reserve” means using the small amount of fuel in the bottom of your tank to avoid running out of fuel. The average capacity of the tank is 5 litres, which allows you to drive between 30 and 60 miles. However, the distance that can be driven on the reserve is difficult to assess accurately because various factors come into play :
- the actual capacity of the reserve
- the speed at which you drive
- the type of fuel used
- the vehicle’s load
- the vehicle’s level of maintenance
- the condition of the tyres
To determine the exact number of miles that can be covered by the reserve, refer to your vehicle’s maintenance booklet.
Top Tip : In some newer vehicles, the amount of fuel left and the number of miles you can drive will be shown on the dashboard.
Why is it best to avoid driving on reserve ?
Although it is possible to drive a few more miles, it is advisable to fill up as soon as possible once the petrol light comes on.
First of all, the fuel gauge’s accuracy is not infallible. If you rely on it, you may think you can continue driving after you have already run out of fuel.
Furthermore, because the reserve is at the bottom of the tank, it contains various impurities that can clog the injection system and damage the engine. The risk is particularly high for diesel engines.
Although useful in preventing fuel exhaustion, driving on reserve fuel should only be for exceptional circumstances.
