What is an international driving licence?

An IDP or International Driving Permit is a permit that allows you to drive in countries where a UK licence alone is not sufficient. The countries where it is needed include the USA, Turkey, Brazil and Japan, among others.

An IDP is required, or at least recommended, in over 140 countries. The type of permit you need depends on the country you are visiting.

Tip: There is an online checker tool on the post office’s website to ascertain which driving permit you will need. If you are driving through more than one country, you might need more than one type of IDP.

You can get an IDP over the counter at the Post Office (check if your nearest branch offers the service before going in).

The IDP costs £5.50, and you must live in Great Britain or Northern Ireland, plus have a UK driving licence and be 18 or over.

Take your valid driving licence, plus a standard passport photograph and your fee (and a valid passport as a form of ID if you are using an older paper driving licence), with you to one of the 2,500 larger post office branches. The process can be done over the counter, and you should be able to take your IDP with you. The IDP is then valid for a year.

Which IDP will I need?

There are three types of IDP available: 1949, 1968 and 1926. The Gov.uk website lists which countries need which type of permit. You must carry your valid UK driving licence at all times with the IDP — in some places, if you have an old-style paper driving licence (so it is worth having an up-to-date photo card before you start the process), you will need an IDP.

What is the validity of an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

An IDP is valid for one to three years, depending on the type required. If you need a permit after that time, you will have to reapply for another permit.

Tip: if you move abroad, you may need to get a local driving licence. Check with the local driving authorities and find out how to apply. In some countries, you can exchange your UK driving licence without having to take another test. Full details are available on the Gov.uk website.

Most foreign countries recognise the IDP: therefore, it is worth applying for one for any stay that will require you to drive. Make sure your UK driving licence is up to date and valid for the period you will be away, as you will need it along with the permit.
