Christmas in Naples

This year, why not immerse yourself in an authentic Neapolitan Christmas, soaking up the festive spirit and rich culture of Campania’s vibrant capital? In Naples, a city renowned for its deep-rooted traditions, the holiday celebrations stretch from 7 December to 6 January, promising a warm and lively southern atmosphere.
Christmas in the City: Celebrating the Neapolitan way
Historic Naples is magical any time of year, but at Christmas the city truly comes alive with lights for the Festa dell’Immacolata Concezione, which kicks off the festive season across Italy. From December onwards, Naples is aglow with twinkling Christmas trees, and its streets and buildings sparkle with decorations. As you wander through the city’s narrow streets, you’re bound to run into Babbo Natale, Naples’ very own version of Father Christmas.
One of Naples’ most cherished traditions is its beautifully crafted nativity scenes, a local speciality. In the heart of Naples’ historic centre, along Via San Gregorio, artisans showcase their incredible skill and creativity with handcrafted figures. From terracotta shepherds and wise men to washerwomen, pastors and mills and fountains, it’s hard not to take home a piece of this magic!
As you stroll through the city, the enchanting sound of the zampogna—the bagpipes of Neapolitan shepherds—fills the air. In a nod to the ancient practice of transhumance, Zampognari wander the streets during the holidays, dressed in traditional sheepskin costumes and black cloaks, filling homes and alleyways with age-old songs and melodies.
Of course, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a bustling market! On Christmas Eve, join the locals at the Porta Nolana fish market, where every true Neapolitan stocks up for the holiday feast. For unique handmade gifts or beautiful home decorations, the Christmas market in the Vomero district is the perfect spot, with its charming wooden stalls offering stunning views over the city.
Embrace the local traditions to the fullest: marvel at the Christmas tree in Piazza del Plebiscito, try your hand at ice skating at the Edenlandia amusement park in Fuorigrotta, or catch a show at Teatro San Carlo (the oldest opera house in Europe), whether it’s a Christmas concert or the beloved Neapolitan play Natale in casa Cupiello.
A central figure of the festive season in Italy, it was once the Befana, not Father Christmas, who brought gifts to children. On 6 January, during the Epiphany, folklore still holds that this kindly old witch visits homes, delivering sweets to well-behaved children and coal to the naughty ones.
Food and festivities: traditional Christmas treats, both sweet and savoury
Wondering when’s the best time to visit Naples? For food enthusiasts, December is the obvious choice. As the year winds down, Naples serves up a feast of culinary delights that only the locals truly know how to master.
Seafood is king on southern Italian Christmas tables. A typical holiday spread showcases a variety of seafood dishes like spaghetti with clams, paccheri with shellfish, and the beloved capitone (female eel), along with fried cod, sea bass, or gilt-head bream.
And let’s not forget the sweet traditions! Start with struffoli, those irresistible little honey-coated fried dough balls that every Neapolitan nonna makes. Each grandma has her own closely guarded recipe, giving you the perfect excuse to sample as many as you can to find your favourite! The festive season also means indulging in spiced mostaccioli biscuits and the delicious rafaioli—round sponge cakes topped with icing, both staples of a Neapolitan Christmas.
As winter nights fall, Naples’ historic landmarks take on a whole new charm, glowing beautifully under the festive lights. This is the perfect time to explore—or revisit—the city’s most famous sights: Castel Nuovo, the cloisters of the Basilica of Santa Chiara, the San Martino monastery, and, of course, the stunning Duomo.
