Can different types of tyres be fitted to a car ?

Wondering if it is possible to fit different types of tyres on your car ? On the same axle or the front and rear axles ? Doing this can have serious consequences, especially concerning the handling of your car. You may also be penalised if you do not comply with legislation. Here's how it works.

Fitting different tyres on the same axle

By law, it is illegal to drive with different tyres on the same axle. They must be perfectly identical in terms of brand, model, dimensions, load and speed ratings, category (summer, winter, four-season) and structure (radial or cross-ply). It is also recommended that their level of wear is similar. This ensures a better grip and, therefore, has a great influence on your safety.

As long as strict criteria are followed, remoulded or retreaded tyres are legal in the UK. Remoulded tyres must be tested to the correct standard and bare the “e” mark. Retreaded tyres are not the same as part-worn tyres. Sellers are bound by strict regulations to ensure tyres are in good condition. The UK Government has introduced regulations to ban tyres over 10 years old on the front-steering axles of heavy vehicles and some minibuses.

Failure to comply with the law can result in fines of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre.

Mixing brands across an axel is not illegal, but it is not recommended, as different tyre brands may vary in features or quality. If two brands are mixed across an axle, then the tread patterns need to be the same on both sides.

Fitting different tyres on the front and rear

Fitting different tyres on the front and rear axles is permitted, provided they are the correct size. However, the law states that you must put radial tyres on the back wheels, never on the front.

The load and speed ratings may be different as long as they are equal to or greater than the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Fitting tyres of different sizes

If your car is not fitted with an original staggered fitment, i.e. different-sized tyres at the front and rear, it is not advisable to fit tyres of different sizes since this could affect its road holding and make driving dangerous.

The exception of 4×4 vehicles

If you own a 4×4, then you have a special case. In fact, for this type of vehicle, the 4 tyres must be the same diameter and as similar as possible to avoid stress and damage to the differential.

All four tyres on a 4×4 should be of the same size, tread pattern, and brand/model. Specifications and patterns between different brands can vary a lot, and these kinds of vehicles are particularly sensitive to tyre variations, which can impact performance.

In conclusion, for peace of mind, we recommend that you fit identical tyres on all four wheels if your vehicle is not equipped with an original offset tyre. If in doubt, do not hesitate to contact a professional mechanic for tyre advice.
