The 125ha El Retiro is a favourite spot of Madrid residents. You can row on the lake (estanque) under the indifferent gaze of King Alfonso XI, or join the locals jogging along the pathways. The more romantically minded may prefer simply to take a moment beside the Fountain of the Fallen Angel and the water, or peruse an exhibition in the Palacio de Cristal (Crystal Palace).
