This Victorian stone mansion (1903) in the graceful Roanoke district is where Thomas Hart Benton and his wife, Rita, lived for 36 years. The famous painter died in his studio in 1975 when he was 85, getting ready to sign a 6ft-by-10ft acrylic he had just finished for the Country Music Hall of Fame. The house displays 13 original works; the carriage house-turned-studio still has easels, paintbrushes and other artist's tools.
