Masaki Sasaki is well known among Bay Area sushi enthusiasts, having worked at a number of the area’s top spots. He’s finally settled into his own restaurant, housed on the ground floor of a quaint Mission Victorian. With only 12 seats at the counter, reservations are a must, but each guest is rewarded with personal attention from Masa-san.
As with many high-end temples of sushi, only one omakase-style menu is offered. But Sasaki throws out the rulebook on proceeding from light to heavy fish. Commence with silky maguro, rich mackerel and creamy monkfish liver, before veering back to a lighter crab and pickled cucumber dish. A parade of nigiri is equally deft, with specially seasoned rice that is individually chosen for each type of fish.- MICHELIN guide inspectors
