The town centre has a lot of character with its pedestrian streets (honouring Gambetta and the Republic) and Basque houses. The oldest house in St Jean is at n° 17 Rue de la République. Surprisingly it is built from ashlar stone, unlike its neighbours which are very much in the Basque style.
