At the western corner of the ramparts, the Gayette Tower is a former gaol, where, in 1785, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and Pierre-Ange Romain could be seen taking off in their balloon in their ill-fated attempt to cross the Channel; unfortunately, they crashed near Wimille.
