The Italian manufacturer Airoh presents a brand-new concept for a motorcycle helmet equipped with an airbag. It aims to ensure better protection of the head in the event of a fall.

This is a major first that could literally revolutionize motorcycle safety. The integrated airbag is automatically triggered in case of an accident, increasing the level of protection for the motorcyclist. In fact, this product combines two technologies dedicated to energy absorption, the helmet and the airbag, which significantly reduces the risk of head injuries.

The airbag in this model, which is still in the concept stage, is inflated by a gas generator using the same technology found in car airbags. This module is compact and completely invisible before being inflated. The design of the helmet, as well as the airbag’s coverage area, volume and pressure have been studied and adjusted through laboratory tests. Further tests will be necessary before the helmet can be sold on the market one day.

The concept was developed in partnership with Autoliv, a legendary manufacturer of safety equipment for motorists. Today, the Swedish company is working to offer other road users — whether they use a motorcycle, a bike or electric scooter — specially-tailored tools, starting with specific airbags.

In addition to the helmet concept developed with Airoh, Autoliv is currently working on other projects, such as an airbag placed on the front of a scooter that would absorb the shock from a crash and avoid the rider being thrown off too violently, or the implementation of an airbag ready to deploy in case of impact on a moped or bike, in addition to those that can be worn by drivers, which already exist.
