Which spare parts are stolen the most?

More accessible and easier to transport, spare parts are a prime target for thieves who steal from vehicles parked outside to feed a flourishing black market: headlights, tyres, rims, windscreen wipers, mirrors, bumpers, etc. All types of spare parts and bodywork can be stolen.

Catalytic converter thefts, in particular, are on the rise. The reason? They contain a few grams of rare and precious metals (rhodium, palladium, gold and platinum), the price of which is reaching record highs, making them highly desirable.

Please note: the theft of accessories or parts related to the operation of the vehicle should not be confused with carjacking, which is the theft of objects located inside the vehicle by breaking and entering.

What steps should be taken in the event of theft of spare parts?

The first step is to report the theft to the police as soon as possible and get a crime reference number. You will need this when you contact your insurance company. They will tell you how to make an insurance claim and if your policy covers the cost of a replacement.

How does insurance compensation work?

If you have third-party insurance, you will unfortunately not receive any compensation unless you have taken out a “theft cover” option.

If you have comprehensive insurance, the compensation will depend on the context:

  • If your vehicle has not been stolen: the theft cover in your insurance contract will not work, so you will only be entitled to compensation if you have taken out an additional optional cover.
  • If your vehicle was stolen and found with a few parts removed: it will be returned to you either to be repaired or written off.

If you cannot park your car or motorbike in a protected area, check your insurance policy carefully: additional cover may be necessary to obtain compensation in the event of theft of spare parts.
