The inspector's view

LaSalette is a passage to Portugal just off Sonoma's town square. While wooden Port wine crates and pumpkin-hued walls may aim to transport, you'll feel right at home thanks to Chef/owner Manuel Azevedo and his wife, Kimberly, who bring the flavors of his native Azores Islands to wine country. Peek into the open kitchen where a wood-burning oven roasts a variety of small plates for sharing. Try the linguiça with queijo fresco —a piece of pork-and-garlic sausage crowned with farmer's cheese and a Portuguese olive. A lunch special of caldeirada (fisherman's stew) unveils a fragrant lobster-saffron broth teeming with fresh seafood and fingerling potatoes; while piri piri fries are dusted with chile powder and served with a creamy garlic-herb aïoli.
