- Remarks
- On the one hand, Hakkasan appears to live up to every cliché of big, corporate Asian dining: long halls and stunning blue glass doors lead to a massive mega-space smartly divided by carved marble and dark wood panels. It is so fully tricked out that the gorgeous waitstaff may have been hired for their casting-call good looks rather than menu knowledge, leaving you wondering if you've accidentally wandered into a nightclub (after all, there is no sign outside except a double "K"). On the other hand, the food here is very good; the dim sum, exceptional. Seafood is their strong point, so begin with the likes of shu mai filled with chopped seafood and pork, topped with a thick slice of high quality sea scallop; or the truly excellent, silky, and tender king crab and mushroom roll. Dumplings might arrive bright green and encase delicate lobster meat, or crunchy, fried, and garlicky. So is this authentic Chinese food? Not exactly: Hakkasan's cuisine is designed to please the high-end Western palate. It may be where Kim Kardashian would come to pose with a pair of chopsticks and a duck-stuffed pumpkin puff—but if she actually ate it, she'd probably tweet that it was "OMG fantastic. "
