Industrial and no-frills, El Metate isn't a looker-but taqueria connoisseurs know it's the place to go for a great meal. Sidle up to the counter and order a round of street-style tacos, topped with well-seasoned carne asada or piquant shredded chicken, then crowned with onions and cilantro. Or go big with an enormous super burrito, stuffed with caramelized, pineapple-studded al pastor, fluffy rice, pinto beans, avocado, cheese, sour cream, and pico de gallo. Located right off the 101, the restaurant's minimal room has lines of both white- and blue-collar lunchtime workers streaming out the door, and crowds of Mexican families on weekends (kids adore it). A well-stocked salsa bar, crisp chips, and a refreshing melon agua fresca help ease the wait.
