Taqueria El Metate will become a personal favorite as soon as you've discovered it. Most everybody here seems well acquainted with this classic hangout and its long lines out the door. From the Harbor Blvd. exit off Highway 101 south, make a sharp right to arrive at their parking lot. Inside, El Metate is roomy with rows of hand-painted local furniture; the wood tables and chairs depict colorful scenes of Mexican food and art. Long tables laden with chips and salsa feel communal; plan to share these during peak hours. The delicious scent of a pork chili verde burrito filled with rice, beans, and queso fresco; and the salty and pineapple-sweet, caramelized al pastor "super" taco topped with chopped onion and cilantro have everyone clamoring for more.
