having read the previous review I just had to put pen to paper, so to speak. I found the front of house staff helpful and met our every need, Matt came out and explained the dishes and even provided extra crackling when asked, my 5 guests and I had a wonderful evening.

En route to the Wild Garlic we had eaten at Fifteen (Cornwall) and Agaric (Ashburton) and had traded dishes and tastes from menus which left us spoilt for choice. We were eagerly anticipating dinner at The Wild Garlic to round off this experience. The menu read well – though only one fish dish ‘special’ which sold out early in the evening proved a limitation. The pigeon breast was significant for the quality of the meat but lacked flavoursome support; the ‘Cheese and Pickle’ – a clever combination of goats cheese and pickled vegetables not only failed to deliver any creative taste but managed to reincarnate itself without the cheese as the ‘green salad’ extra to the main course. The main courses of steak and venison are memorable for the quality for the meat only. Bearnaise with the steak which came as a cold butter only achieved the level of a quality sauce at the second attempt, by which time the dish overall was tepid. The only tastes we traded were the cuts of meat. Representations to the Front of House were unproductive and discussion with the Chef seemed to focus more on his telling us that he had 24 ‘happy customers’ so we were wrong. Our leaving before finishing the meal resulted in very limited, but understandable, capacity from the house staff to respond as the Chef is running everything. So the full account in excess of £90.00 paid for a poor dining experience and seemingly little interest in why our expectations had not been met.
