The wrought-iron doors are staffed, limos are lined up around the corner, and those Italian accents are real at Del Posto. In an unlikely feat of design and ambience, this western Manhattan mecca feels new and desirable, yet also like some theatrical episode from a bygone era: cue the tuxedo-clad gentleman, tickling the ivories. Sloping staircases, polished woods, and inlaid marble might seem intentionally heavy, but this vast and assertively masculine space has its charms in rich fabrics and traditional luxuries. Tables are large, private, and posh with a few soft touches, like those floral-patterned plates that any baronessa would love. The menu strives to offer a tour of Italy, with pastas that can be interesting and downright amazing. Count on high-flying seasonal ingredients to make an appearance again and again: excellent black truffles land with sophistication and aplomb over beef carpaccio. Every bite is right in lamb alla Romana, perfectly slow-roasted for 16 hours, served with Swiss chard, chickpeas, and garlicky yogurt. Desserts reveal silky, steamed chestnut nuggets, seasoned with Meyer lemon and tangerine zest over sweetened mascarpone. Lunch menus are a genuine bargain.
