Oltrepò’s Club Pinò
Mark Perna-2009-04-27
Club Pinò. Not an Italian football club, but an association of Pinot Noir enthusiasts and producers from Oltrepò Pavese (Province of Pavia) in the north-west Italian region of Lombardy. Underlining the close ties between the region and its historic wine making traditions, these six companies have now joined forces to create a unified, professional body responsible for promoting the qualities of the region’s Pinot Noir wines.
A noble history
Second only to Burgundy at European level, Oltrepò boasts 2,500 hectares of Pinot Noir vineyards. A hundred years of history and an unbridled passion for the Pinot Noir grape variety has prompted six ambitious and enthusiastic Oltrepò wine producers to focus their energies, resources and commitment to promoting this most ancient and noble of vines that has been grown in the region’s hills as far back as the Roman era.
No other Italian region can compare with Oltrepò Pavese’s historical connection with Pinot Noir wines or with the number of vineyards in the region devoted to this grape variety. Oltrepò’s microclimate of traditionally cool nights lends itself to a lengthy ripening process and the development of elegant bouquets that have established Pinot Noir wines at both national and international level. This factor, along with the rolling slopes between Lombardy and Piedmont, so soft with marl and limestone soil, has attracted significant investment in the cultivation of Pinot Noir within the region.
A commitment to excellence
The six founders of Club Pinò: Conte Vistarino, Frecciarossa, La Versa, Marchese Adorno, Tenuta Il Bosco and Tenuta Mazzolinohave have pooled their know-how and experience to launch a development project focusing on what is widely accepted as Oltrepò’s most interesting and typical red wines.
The groups’ common objective is to encourage the production of Pinot Noir of the highest quality and its manifesto details three key objectives: to promote, protect and enhance the visibility of Pinot Noir winemaking and its image as a product of excellence for the Oltrepò Pavese region; to join forces in raising awareness of cultivation and processing techniques that will improve overall quality; to promote the adoption of recognized quality standards for Pinot Noir producers.
Among the Association’s future projects is a commitment to share its experience and findings with other companies in the area and to stimulate dialogue with related institutions.
