Remarks
The Royal Palace is a vast building organised around a square courtyard, with a semi-circular courtyard to the west that opens out to the water from a terrace with two wings. The interior is decorated in rococo style, largely created by French artists: Bouchardon, Oudry, and Boucher, tapestries from Beauvais and the Gobelins, which make a striking contrast with the very classical façades. The State Apartments are on the second floor of the north wing, and lead into the sumptuous Charles XI Gallery and the ballroom known as the White Sea because of the dominant colour of the stucco and the decorations. On the first floor, the Bernadotte Gallery has a series of royal portraits and various rooms. The Guest Apartments, in the west wing are a suite of rooms decorated with mythological themes. The bedroom in particular is hung with tapestries that show the Metamorphoses of Ovid and paintings by Boucher hang over the doors.
The Castle houses several museums that trace the history of the building, (the Castle Museum, in the lower parts of the north wing, show the substructures of the original keep), the royal treasure, (the Treasure Chamber houses the Crown Jewels) and the symbols of royalty (Queen Christine's silver throne I in the Throne Room and the Livery Museum displays carriages, armour and ceremonial costumes).
