Knights' Island only has a few inhabitants left today, important people living in the few remaining palaces and mansions that have not been taken over by the Administration. So it empties in the evenings, leaving passers-by to enjoy the view over the city from Evert Taubert's terrace, from the reddish tints of the Town Hall in the west to the heights of the Södermalm in the south.
To the south, the Gamla Riksdaghuset church, a massive building that housed Parliament until 1905 ; to the north, a small triangular square, Biger Jarls Torg, bordered by 2 Tessin palaces: the Steinbock (where the Supreme Court sits) and opposite, the Wrangel (where the royal family lived after the fire of 1697 and which now houses the Court of Appeals.) The north tower of the palace, and the Jarl Tower on the north-west point of the island, are the remains of the fortifications built by Gustav Hasa (1530).
