On the residential first floor or piano nobile were the reception rooms (notably the attractive Parrots' Hall, used as a dining room and ceremonial hall); the second floor has the same layout and has a nuptial chamber decorated with frescoes inspired by the medieval novel, the Lady of Vergy; the kitchens were on the third floor. A rarity at the time, thanks to a clever device installed in a hollow space in the walls, each floor had a latrine and another system operated by a pulley distributed water from a well in the courtyard to each floor.
The museum, opened to the public in 1956, has a splendid display of furniture, tapestries and domestic objects from the 16 and 17C, collected by Elia Volpi, the Palace's last owner.
On the square, opposite the Davanzati house, are the 13C Foresi tower-houses, the remains of fortified houses common in Florence in medieval times.
