Plus d'information
Most of the current building dates from the years 1871-1878, but the northern wall of the nave was part of the original cathedral. In the baptistry, converted from the old north porch by George Street, the baptismal font is made of different coloured Irish marble. The south transept contains the remarkable tomb of the count of Kildare, who died in 1734, and whose recumbent statue is remarkably realistic. In the south aisle, the «Strongbow» monument commemorates the Earl of Pembroke, and for centuries it was specified as the place of payment in legal contracts.
The12C Norman crypt (access from the south aisle) was originally used for services before being let to shopkeepers and then used for burials. It now houses the stocks (1670) which used to be in the churchyard.
