In 1856, a street pedlar, Xavier Ruel, founded what has since become the popular BHV. A commercial innovation: it was the first large store to install counters with fixed prices. The current layout of this store dates from 1913 and you should not miss going downstairs to the DIY section. For the uninitiated it is tinged with poetry emanating from objects with most improbable uses but which only the organised master classes (at 12.30 pm and 4 pm) at the Bricolo Café will reveal all!
