Latin Quarter

Address
Amagertorv DK - 1153 København
Remarks
Huddled between Strøget to the south and the parkst to the north and east, the "Latin Quarter" of Copenhagen revolves around the University (founded by Christian IV in 1479), which was based on the English colleges and the Cathedral of Our Lady, that stands opposite: nothing remains of the early gothic building that was destroyed by fire in 1728, nor of the second cathedral, which was bombarded by the English in 1807. The current neo-classical church (1811-29) is preceded by a doric peristyle covering statues of Moses and David and has a square tower. Statues by Thorvaldsen occupy the interior of the church, which does not have an abside.
The Latin Quarter is partly pedestrianised and the narrow streets are lined with bookshops, fashion boutiques and cafés. It is an ideal place to wander, stopping off at spots like Gråbrødretorv, a little square full of tables and parasols during the summer.
