Surrounded by its canals and busy banks, the "Castle Island" is the original site where Absalon erected the first fortress in 1167, the remains of which can still be seen (well, foundations) under the current palace, which was rebuilt in the rococo style from 1907 to 1928. On the other bank, perched on his horse, Absalon still seems to be watching proudly over the early heart of the city.
To the southeast, the old Stock Exchange (1619) in its Dutch Renaissance style, stands out with its original steeple formed from four intertwined dragon's tails. In an entirely different style, the well-stocked neo-medieval Royal Library (1906) was enlarged in 1999 with the Black Diamond, a remarkable building with a central glass canopy flanked by two wings of polished black granite.
