A present from the Americans for the international architectural exposition of 1957, the old congress hall was baptised with the name of pregnant oyster due to its shape. In 1981, its roof, seemingly floating and resting on two exterior pillars, caved in causing one death. It was reconstructed in 1987 for the 750th anniversary of Berlin. Since 1989, the Cultures of the World House, a forum for non-European cultures, organises numerous events.
