It was in this very popular district that the social democrats, wishing to get closer to the popular theatre, created The Popular Theatre Association which was provided with its own theatre. There were 70,000 members, but it was particularly the Jewish public who responded to this initiative. The Volksbühne attracted famous directors between the two world wars. To one side, the Babylon cinema and the Karl-Liebknecht-Haus showed numerous foreign classics.
