This district is continually crowded in the daytime with passers-by strolling down the two pedestrian thoroughfares, Graben* and Kärtnerstrasse, which converge, not far from Stephansdom***, St Stephen's Cathedral, close to the centre of the Innerring, the old part of the city inside the boulevards. Apart from the café terraces and shop windows, you will often come across actors, musicians and singers and, in winter, Carol choirs, who, in typical Viennese fashion, give spontaneous performances in the street. For a more peaceful atmosphere, this district has an abundance of tiny streets, full of charm, where the spirit of Mozart still lingers, particularly at night when the street lamps illuminate the ochre and pink façades of the Baroque palaces. The composer lived here for several of his happiest years in the Figaro-Haus*, «House of Figaro», now a museum. His last residence, no 8 Rauhensteingasse (Mozarthaus) is not far away.
