Edinburgh: Murrayfield Stadium

Edinburgh: Murrayfield Stadium

Inaugurated in 1925, the stadium holds its own record - that of accommodating the greatest number of spectators for a match. In March 1975, 104,000 fans flocked to Murrayfield to watch Scotland play Wales during the 5 Nations tournament.

In 1982 Murrayfield’s transformation began: a comprehensive modernising process that would take 12 years to complete. The result? A new, fully covered stadium of 67,500 seats launched in 1994. A field-warming system is integrated to allow the 6 Nations tournament, traditionally fought from January to end March, to be held there. In the “Athens of the North” (Edinburgh’s nickname), Murrayfield remains the stuff that the Scottish team’s dreams are made of, as its specialty has traditionally been causing the downfall of certain idols.

The stadium has already hosted a World Cup in 1999, including the Scotland-New Zealand quarter final (18-30). The Scots will receive Romania on 18 September, before challenging New Zealand on 23 September for the Pool C final. The celebrated anthem The Flower of Scotland is sure to ring out loud and clear.
