Remarks Boasting a strong and meticulously displayed collection of works spanning the centuries from ancient times to the present, the Detroit Institute of Arts is the fifth-largest fine-arts museum in the country. Today the collection exceeds 55,000 objects spread over more than 100 galleries. Strengths of the permanent collection include nine 18C French galleries. In the third-floor European art galleries hang several large works by Rubens and Bruegel; the newly refurbished modern and contemporary art galleries contain excellent examples of nearly all the major 20C schools. Diego Rivera's fresco cycle Detroit Industry remains the institute's pièce de résistance.
