New Vauxhall/Opel GT

Vauxhall/Opel has decided to give a new lease of life to its legendary model, the famous Opel GT, launched in 1965. The new version, a turbo-powered roadster, was inspired by the Saturn Sky concept car presented at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2005.

The Opel GT, a legendary coupé presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1965, is set to return in the shape of an attractive roadster, with its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Largely inspired by the Saturn Sky roadster, this new two-seater GT should boast the same attractive lines and a truncated rear. Weighing around 1,300 kg, it will be motorised by a powerful 4-cylinder direct injection engine, which is already used on the Pontiac Solstice GXP.

History has it that the presentation of the first GT in Europe in 1965 caused a sensation, so much did this car depart from the aesthetic principles in force on the Old Continent at the time. Its exterior design was inspired by a new style in vogue in the United States, dubbed "coke bottle" on account of its shape. The lines of the GT distinguished themselves by a very low front with retractable headlights, very distinctive flared wheel arches, a considerable narrowing of width at the level of the doors, even more bulging wheel arches at the rear, and finishing with a dramatically truncated rear end. Over 100,000 units were built between 1968 and 1973, and the GT has since become a collector's item.
