Nissan Terranaut, a new 4X4 concept

Skilfully surfing the wave of the 4X4 and that of the environment, Nissan presents an amazing concept car: the Terranaut, an off-roader intended for the observation of nature.

A combination of "terra", Terrano (a basic model of the Nissan range) and cosmonaut, the "Terranaut" is a vehicle for exploring nature.

In addition to the driver and front-seat passenger, the vehicle can take a third team member in the back, with computer and analysis equipment, on location. The latter benefits from a veritable mobile laboratory "designed for observation and communication in all four corners of the world", in the words of Felipe Roo Clefas, Terranaut project manager at Nissan Design Europe in London. In this spherical work environment, which includes a 360° revolving seat equipped with computer keyboard, the researcher can work under natural light from the glass dome in the roof.

Although the Terranaut has just one door on the co-pilot's side, a pair of swing doors on the other side provides a vast opening with no central pillar, for ease of access.

The Terranaut's large wheels are fitted with tyres specially designed for the vehicle. These tyres perform in the traditional way on roads suitable for motor vehicles, but adapt to any kind of terrain thanks to a tyre pressure control system.
