Lotus Europa S

This year the British manufacturer is presenting the Lotus Europa S, a two-seater GT (Grand Tourer) model - less overtly sporty than its counterparts, Elise and Exige, but just as light on the scales.

With a tradition of excellence, driving pleasure and chassis beyond compare, the high-powered cars of the British marque created by Colin Chapman are the stuff of dreams. This new Lotus Europa S nevertheless proclaims the more democratic title of Grand Tourer.

Unlike the aggressive 100% sport models such as the Elise or Exige, the Europa S sets out to be a more simple and accessible model. Aesthetically it epitomises discretion and displays flowing lines that are somewhat reminiscent of the Porsche Cayenne. Some of the harshest critics even speak of a form of "embourgeoisement": access on board has been greatly facilitated, the boot capacity has increased, leather makes its appearance in the passenger compartment, and the floor is carpeted!

The Europa S uses the same aluminium chassis (Space Frame) as its elders, giving it a featherweight of 995 kg. For even greater lightness it also uses door panels made of composite material. Beneath the bonnet, a 2-litre turbo engine (263 Nm and 205 hp) offers a fine spectrum of use, with 90% of the maximum torque reached from 2,000 rpm. According to the manufacturer, it should go from 0 to 96 kph (60 mph) in 5.5 seconds, with a top speed of 225 kph (140 mph).
Production of the Lotus Europa S will commence at the beginning of July 2006 at the factory in Norfolk, England, and the price is expected to be in the region of £33,000.
