On the road
The Porsche Cayman S

To counter the new Mercedes SLK, on 25 November 2005 Porsche will launch its new Cayman S: a 2-seater coupé which differs from the previous Boxster in style and power, but which doesn't equal the legendary 911.

Based on the Boxster roadster (created 10 years ago already!), at first sight the Cayman coupé differs only in its fixed hardtop: a rigidity which assists aerodynamics and offers increased safety in the event of a rollover. Compared to the Boxster and Carrera models, the coupé's lines are original, with plenty of curves. The front section looks more dynamic, with its oval headlamps and generous air intakes incorporating new fog lamps. With curved wings and an automatically extending spoiler, the tail end has plunging lines that convey a feeling of power and sensuality... This car is indeed designed for pleasure!

Despite a strict 2-seat configuration, emphasis is placed on practicality. In addition to a 150-litre luggage compartment in the nose, the Cayman S has a 260-litre boot at the rear, accessible via a long glazed tailgate. Inside there are also numerous storage compartments at the level of the dashboard.

In terms of power the Cayman coupé outstrips the Boxster, with a 3.4-litre 6-cylinder engine that delivers 295 hp instead of 280 hp. We are, however, a long way from the legendary 911 Carrera and its 325 hp But it is interesting to note that the Cayman has inherited the Carrera's VarioCam Plus system, delivering variable intake camshaft control and valve timing.
More compact than the Boxster (4.34 m long, 1.80 m wide and 1.31 m tall), the Cayman S proves just as spirited, particularly on acceleration. In suitable conditions (on a closed track, for example), the Cayman S can reach 275 kph (171 mph) and goes from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds. In other words, just one tenth of a second less than the Boxster S, and four tenths more than the Carrera.
Transmission (also based on the Boxster) is via a manual 6-speed gearbox beneath the rear boot. There is, however, the option of a 5-speed automatic Tiptronic S gearbox, specially adapted for this sports coupé, and which allows you to shift gears using controls on the steering wheel spokes.

Could the official name "Cayman S" imply that Porsche is preparing other less powerful and more affordable versions of this model? Time will tell...
